Thursday is the big day!

Well, it isn't that big of a day! But, I am just so excited to start this next round. I go for bloodwork and ultrasound on Thursday (3/29/12) and will start the estrogen patches. It is a very easy appointment but I just want to get things rolling again! Stay tuned for more posts about this round of IVF. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. We will definitely be praying for a positive outcome because we don't know if we can go through all of this a third time.

Where we've been!

We thought it would be a good idea to post a little background on our journey through infertility. Please feel free to share this with anyone you know that is or has struggled with infertility. It is so nice to have other people who can personally relate to what you are going through. I know it would be so much harder for me if I didn't have two people that are close to me to confide in! They have both had success with IVF and I look to them all the time for optimism and support. You know who you are and I thank you!!!
Our journey:
We started trying to conceive in October 2010. I had so much optimism that first month but it was followed by months of disappointment. I never started a cycle after going off birth control in October. I finally saw my OB/GYN in January 2011 and we tried starting it with medicine, which failed. We then tried two months of Clomid, didn't work :( I will never forget the conversation I had with the PA at my OB's office. She said they recommended that I gain weight (like 10 lbs) and then try again OR I could go to an RE (who she said would just tell me to gain the weight). I never thought I would hear someone tell me I had to gain weight to get pregnant, as I never considered myself an extremely thin person. I mean, I know I have never been overweight, I just always considered myself "average" for my height. Anyway, we decided to go to the RE and see what he had to say! That was May 2011 (can't believe it has almost been a year since first meeting with him). After an initial consultation and some bloodwork, I was diagnosed with Hypothalamic Amenorrhea. Basically, my body was not producing enough estrogen (mine produced barely any). My doctor believed this was due to my BMI being low. It was in the average range but on the low side. He recommended that I gain 10 lbs and reduce my exercise intensity. This was EXTREMELY difficult for me. I mean, I know how much I want a child, but working out is such a stress reliever for me that I just couldn't imagine doing that. Also, I had recently started a very healthy, clean diet and couldn't imagine eating "crap" to gain 10 lbs. So, I saw a nutritionist that specialized in fertility. This was great but started me on this whole fertility diet, which has been great because it follows how I want to eat, but makes it SO difficult to eat anywhere but my home. I am getting used to it by now but I think it is still difficult for everyone else in my life to understand. Sometimes, I think others think I am just making it up. But, it has been shown to work and at this point, I will try anything.
My doctor recommended we start by trying an IUI (intrauterine insemination). We started that in July 2011. I went through about 3 weeks of stimulation medication because my body was responding slowly to the meds. It was a rough and emotional three weeks. I didn't know what to expect and was stressing over finding sitters for Caitlin (turns out it has just been easier to bring her to all my appointments). We finally had our IUI on August 9th. The procedure was simple but I had HORRIBLE cramping the next day. My body produced a lot (almost too many) follicles, which was probably the cause of the awful cramps. I couldn't get off the couch and was home alone with Caitlin all day. She was such a good girl! Needless to say, the IUI was not successful. Such a bummer :( To top it off, I developed cysts after that cycle, so we had to wait a month. Then, we were about to start the next round at the end of September and I developed fluid in my uterus. So, that IUI round was canceled too. I was just crushed. I didn't understand why my body was rejecting all of this.
At this point, we met with our doctor and he thought that IVF was the only way to go at this point. My body was requiring such high doses of meds that IUIs were too risky. I was at great risk of multiples (triplets, etc) because my body was producing so many follicles. He said that IVF was a better option because they are able to control the amount of embryos implanted! Never in a million years would I think I would ever be going through IVF. But, we are very fortunate to live in Illinois and have IVF covered by insurance. I couldn't imagine having the financial burden on top of all the stress that goes along with fertility treatments.
We started our first round of IVF at the end of November 2011. Our protocol was as follows:
Birth Control for 3 weeks
Lupron shots
Lupron and Follistim Shots
150 Follistim/150 Menopur/5 Lupron
HCG Shot was on 11/29/11
Egg Retrieval 12/1/11 21 eggs retrieved
Progesterone Shots started on 12/2/11
14 eggs were fertilized
12/2/11: had 9 embryos
12/3/11: 6 embryos survived
12/4/11: Day 3 transfer of 2 embryos (an 8 cell and a 6 cell)
12/6/11: started estrogen patches
12/16/11: pregnancy test day, we weren't pregnant, so devastated :(
We met with our doctor on 12/22 to discuss the results of the first IVF round. He stated that we had poor embryo quality, which was a concern. He also said it might be due to poor egg quality, which was so devastating for me to hear. I already have had enormous amounts of guilt because I have felt like it is all my fault that we can't get pregnant. So, this was just like the icing on the cake. Luckily, I started seeing a psychologist in December who has helped me sort through all these feelings. My doctor also suggested that I start going to acupuncture (great, something else to add to my crazy schedule). I started going to acupuncture in January 2012. I have to say, I actually LOVE it and hope that it helps.
We were scheduled to start our next IVF round in January but that was put on hold because of a totally separate issue. In November 2011, I noticed a lump on my upper right thigh. I mentioned it to my GP who suggested I see a surgeon. I finally met with the surgeon in January and he recommended an MRI. The results of the MRI weren't good, so I then had to have a biopsy of the tumor. It turned out to be something called nodular fasciitis. I had to have the tumor removed 2/24/12 and it is now healing nicely! However, this has delayed everything 3 months. It has been so discouraging and upsetting. I am just hoping it has all been worth the wait!

It's been a long time!

It has been a long time since we posted on our blog. We decided we want to start blogging again before our next round of IVF. We thought this would be the easiest way to keep everyone up to date on the process. We love all the support we have received from our family and friends but sometimes don't have time to respond to all e-mails, texts, calls about dr appts, etc. So, hopefully we will remember to post here and anyone interested can check it out here! Thank you to all for caring so much! It has been a rough year and a half. We are trying to stay positive about this next round.

8 Months

DSCN4200 Grandpa Dalton thought it would be funny to buy Caitlin some Cubs gear.  I think we already “lost” it somewhere in our condo!!!!

DSCN4211 Caitlin had lots of fun this summer playing with her friend, Sophia!  Unfortunately, I had to go back to work so we won’t be able to have as many play dates.  They are so cute together!

DSCN4259  DSCN4229 DSCN4237 DSCN4252 We had a fun visit with Blake, Joey, Laney and Hadley at the end of August!  The daddies took the girls to Lincoln Park Zoo while the mommies went shopping on Armitage!  Fun Day for all!  That night we thought it would be fun to go out to dinner with 3 kids who were nap-deprived.  Let’s just say it was an interesting dinner!!  At least the food was good.  Actually, the girls did an amazing job at dinner considering they were all tired!

 DSCN4273 DSCN4276 DSCN4296 DSCN4313

Caitlin is such a happy girl!  She loves almost everything.  The swing at the park is her favorite.  She also LOVES her bath, especially now that she can take a bath like a big girl.  She laughs like crazy when Grant squirts her with her bath toys.  It is too funny.  She is willing to try almost any type of food we give her.  Some of the new ones are:  toast, black beans, crackers, pumpkin, yogurt melts, bread.  She actually didn’t like asparagus and hard boiled egg yolks!  We’ll keep trying with those.  Caitlin has gained lots of weight since starting formula and solids.  She weighs 16 lbs. 4 oz. as of Sept. 11.  We are very happy because she was so small for such a long time!!

It has been a rough transition to daycare (more for me than for her).  Caitlin LOVES playing with the other kids and has a huge smile on her face when I leave her there in the morning.  The only problem is that she doesn’t want to take her morning nap there.  This makes for a crabby baby when I pick her up.  At least she is getting one good nap there (an hour and 45 minutes).  I really hope she starts taking both naps.  She is such a good sleeper at home.  She usually takes two 1 1/2 to 2 hour naps a day and sometimes a third nap.  Then, she sleeps about 11 hours at night.  I am just so happy that she is still sleeping through the night!

We have a totally different baby on our hands these days!  Caitlin is now able to sit on her own, do the army crawl, say “dada” (and lots of other sounds) and eat new things.  She is also getting her two bottom teeth in the middle.

We started giving her “table food” this week.  Well, our version of table food anyway.  She has tried pieces of bananas, avocados and sweet potatoes.  I still make sure they are pretty mashed before I give them to her.  I am so afraid she will choke.  She definitely makes the chewing motion now when she gets food, so at least she knows what to do.  She also really likes the teething biscuits and frozen bananas in the food nets.  She isn’t a fan of the Gerber puffs.  She knows what to do with them but just makes a horrible face when we give them to her.  She also really likes the YoBaby yogurt, which I think smells so nasty.

We started baby proofing the house this week because Caitlin is on the move!  She is too lazy to get up on the fours, so for now she does the army crawl.  She is talking all the time now and loves to say “dadadadada” and “lalalalala.”  She just started saying “num, num, num” when eating, which I think is her imitating “yum, yum”  She is just so much fun these days.  I am going to be very sad going back to work in two weeks.

Caitlin gave us a scare last week.  She has been having these involuntary arm movements (like getting a chill or shiver) for the last few weeks.  We videotaped one of the episodes and took her to the doctor.  They want us to monitor her until her 9 month appointment and then we will see what happens.  So for now we have to videotape her when we can and keep a log of every time it happens.  That hasn’t been too fun.  It’s weird though because it only seems to happen when she is sitting up in the highchair during mealtime.  So, we are praying that it turns out to just be a faze or something.  If it continues, we will probably take her to a neurologist.  Anyone know a good one for kids???

She has been having fun going to her playgroup on Wednesdays, going for walks with Colleen and Andy and playing with Sophia.  She also had fun at the beach with Tracy, Billy and Madeline!  Caitlin went to her first Mendota Sweet Corn Festival this month with mommy, Grandmo and Grandpa.  Grandpa can’t wait to tell her all his stories of growing up in Mendota!!

On August 1st, she went to Saugatuck for the first time for her cousin, Olivia’s, first birthday party!  She loved playing with her cousin and all her toys!  It was a very fun and relaxing weekend.

7 Months Old-July 2009

Caitlin was very busy in July (so were mommy and daddy, which is why we are so behind on the blog!!)!  She went to Brookfield Zoo for the second time with mommy and “Auntie” Katy Dubina.  She also had fun with mommy, Grandmo, Grandpa and Uncle Books in Michigan City, IN.  She wasn’t a fan of the cold Lake Michigan water though (see pic above).  Of course, she also went to a few Sox games and really enjoyed all the sights and sounds.

She enjoyed playing with “big girl” toys (shapes, rings, musical toys, etc).  She had lots of “firsts” this month.  She took a FULL bottle of formula and could hold the bottle all by herself (in fact, we discovered this when Grandpa gave her the bottle while she was laying on the floor.  She just held it and drank it-see pic above).  She also sat in her stroller like a big girl for the first time.  She started sitting and was pushing up on all fours. I even saw her go from her belly to sitting all by herself!  She also learned to scoot backwards.

She continues to entertain us, especially with her silly faces and fun sounds.  She LOVES to have her tongue out and it is out most of the time.  She likes to make a cute “cheese” face and show us her gums (it’s too cute).  She loves talking and is such a happy girl.

She loves her solid food and eats two meals a day, in addition to her milk.  She likes everything we have given her.  If I had to pick her least favorite food, it would be green beans.  But, she will eat them.

Trip to Michigan (6 Months Old)

DSCN3533DSCN3754 DSCN3783

We went to Michigan from July 3-July 8.  We started in Glen Arbor for Laurie and Drew’s wedding.  It was at the Homestead Resort and was just beautiful.  The weather was perfect and the wedding was a blast.  Caitlin had fun with all of her grandparents that weekend.  Mom and Dad were busy with wedding festivities so her grandparents helped out ALOT!!!  From Glen Arbor, we traveled to Mackinac Island.  Caitlin liked the ferry ride and the carriage ride.  It was pretty cold there. After that, we went to Ludington for a night and stayed at a Bed and Breakfast.  Caitlin enjoyed swinging in the baby swing at the park there.  She was excellent in all the car rides.  We got pretty lucky, just a few fussy times!

She got a new nickname during this week, Curious Caitlin. She is always looking around at everyone and everything.  She never wants to miss any of the action.  She also started reaching her arms out to mommy and others when wanting to go to them.  It is so cute!!

She learned to roll to belly during diaper changes now, which really frustrates mommy and daddy.  She is such a wiggleworm.  She really enjoyed the fireworks in EP on July 2nd.  She just sat in mommy’s arms, drank her bottle and stared at them.
